Astral Lanes is a recreational facility for the staff stationed inside the Motherlobe, and reachable from the Lobby through a tunnel decorated with blue and purple lighting. Its main feature is a bowling alley, but it also includes a bar area known as the Levitation Lounge.
The bowling alley at Astral Lanes consists of two bowling lanes, with shutters that reset the pins and block them in case someone walks on the lanes. Using Telekinesis to bowl is apparently allowed. The bowling alley is accompanied by a booth for an attendant, who loans and cleans the bowling shoes. Ford Cruller took on this role after returning to the Motherlobe during Psychonauts 2, resulting in a facet of his personality known as Bowling Ford. Astral Lanes hosts a bowling league, and is occasionally reserved for members only.
The Levitation Lounge, meanwhile, is a small bar area next to the bowling lanes with a few tables and some screens displaying advertisements. Alcoholic beverages are served here, though of course the bartender will refuse to serve underage interns. According to a message board outside, the bar is open late.
The entirety of Astral Lanes is lit with purple lighting and has purple carpeting with pink brain and spiral patterns. It also has a jukebox playing "Drag Me Down" by All Paul on repeat, a song previously heard in Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin.
Role in Psychonauts 2[]
Once Razputin brings Ford Cruller back to the Motherlobe, the old man immediately lapses into his habit of taking on several jobs at once, including the job of bowling alley attendant. Raz must reach this aspect of Ford in his efforts to un-shatter Ford's mind.
Astral Lanes is opened to the public after Ford arrives, but Razputin is not allowed inside of the bowling alley just yet, as Ford says it is reserved for the Senior League. According to a photo near the entrance, the only remaining member of this club is Compton Boole, so Raz has to borrow his Senior League Membership Card before being allowed entry.
Once Raz does gain entry to Astral Lanes, he can explore Bowling Ford's mind, known as Strike City. Some other employees are also found relaxing inside, including Coach Oleander, who can be found drinking alone at one of the tables in the Levitation Lounge. He is sulking over his plans for a PsychoMech Battle Bot, which will not be receiving funding, and considering alternate options to get it built. While he's here, Raz can also use Telekinesis to throw bowling balls at the pins. Doing this a few times yields a Deck of Cards from the ball return.
In the post-game, Sasha and Milla are found at the Levitation Lounge in the middle of some work-related small talk, as they prepare to return to Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. Furthermore, Ford confirms that he'll continue working at the bowling alley for at least a little while after the game's ending.
Trivia[]
- A poster in the Levitation Lounge advertises Honey Pepper Boar Bacon-flavored milkshakes. Although this must mean that the bar does serve non-alcoholic drinks, the bartender still outright refuses to serve Raz.
- While he's still around as the bowling alley attendant, Ford has various lines for different outcomes when Raz throws a bowling ball at the pins.
