The Brain Tumbler is a device that allows subjects to access the astral plane through the collective unconscious, and from there, to enter their own minds or the minds of others they've previously formed connections with. This procedure is typically monitored from the outside, and may be used by psychonauts in attempts to probe a subject's mind for information. The Brain Tumbler can also be used to sedate people.[1]

Psychonauts[]

There is a brain tumbler located in Sasha's lab under the GPC. It was used by Sasha Nein to allow Razputin to explore his own psyche in the Brain Tumbler Experiment.

Psychonauts 2[]

There is a brain tumbler in Sasha's office. Sasha used it to run mental probing experiments on Dr. Loboto in Psychonauts 2. Raz can also use this brain tumbler to access the Collective Unconscious.

There is also a brain tumbler in the Heptadome which Raz can also use to access the Collective Unconscious in Green Needle Gulch.

Trivia[]

  • Two brain tumblers that appear in the Psychonauts series belong to Sasha Nein.
    • Apparently, Sasha picked one of his brain tumblers up at a low price, as evidenced by his saying: "Why did I have to buy the cheap Brain Tumbler...?" in Psychonauts.
    • Sasha states that the brain tumbler in his office is in dire need of a "delousing", so long as he can get Hollis to pay for it.
  • In the French versions of Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2, the machine's name is "Tour Mental" (mental turn), also a pun on "tourmente", which means "tormented".
  • The Brain Tumbler spins and whirs like a tumble dryer.
  • According to Sasha, each test using this machine costs taxpayers a lot of money.
