Crispin Whytehead |
–Crispin, when confronted by Raz without a disguise
Crispin Whytehead is a former resident of Thorney Towers. His current status and whereabouts are unknown.
Background[]
Crispin was once an inmate himself. He used to be mute and unresponsive. The staff stuck him in a padded cell for a long time, until orderly Fred Bonaparte took pity on him and tried to get him to communicate by playing a board game, "Waterloo-O". Crispin proved to be brilliant at the game and beat Fred 27 times in a row. This helped Crispin out of his original catatonic state, but plunged Fred into a massive inferiority complex, leading to his mind being taken over by a genetic memory of his ancestor Napoleon Bonaparte. After the arrival of Coach Oleander some years later, he was appointed Chief Orderly and elevator operator for Dr. Loboto. It is unknown if he managed to escape the asylum before its destruction.
Personality[]
Once a former mute, Crispin speaks in a quiet and mannerly tone. Crispin is a bitter and sadistic person. It is never shown why he was sent to the Asylum, or why he was temporarily catatonic. He has the most wild laugh out of all the characters when tickled with the Crow Feather.
Appearance[]
Crispin is a short man with greasy, bluish green hair. He has an enormous forehead and a protruding brow. He has one crooked tooth sticking out of his mouth. He wears an Orderly's coat over his straitjacket, with red and purple patches sewn on the elbows. His sneakers are red with white laces. He wears green and dark green striped pants. He has cloudy blue pupils.
Psychonauts[]
Crispin is the elevator guard and won't let anyone (who isn't Dr. Loboto) use it. Unfortunately, Raz needs access to the elevator to reach Dr. Loboto's laboratory. Crispin is immune to Confusion attacks and the psycho-portal, but has very poor vision. Razputin must create a costume of Dr. Loboto to trick Crispin into letting him onto the elevator. Once Raz gains access to the elevator, Fred confronts Crispin and tries to physically tackle him, causing Crispin to run away in fear.
Trivia[]
- Trying to use the Psycho-Portal will cause a message to pop up: “From the desk of Dr. Caligosto Loboto, D.D.S: Please be advised that I have taken measures to protect my patient, Crispin Whytehead from any and all invasive psychic procedures. Even if your name is Coach Oleander and even if I am currently working with you to take over the world, that doesn’t give you the right to recruit away my elevator operator with your little mental tricks!”. At this, Raz will muse “Darn.” (Note: “D.D.S” is an acronym, meaning “Doctor of Dental Surgery”, in reference to Loboto’s occupation.)
- Using Clairvoyance on Crispin shows Raz as a blurry version of Dr. Loboto, even if he lacks the disguise.
- After Fred Bonaparte chases after him away, it becomes impossible to find Crispin afterwards due to him completely disappearing from the game.
- His name is shown as "Crispen Whitehead the Orderly" in his concept art, an altered spelling of his current name.
- On April 24, 2019, Scott C. posted on an Instagram story his concept art of Crispin and said that the character was inspired by famous actor and former firefighter Steve Buscemi.
- Crispin uses different spelling variations of his name in the game's filenames. Some include Crispen, Cryspin, and Cryspen.
- On an official Double Fine Twitch stream, Tim Schafer joked about how he could have died in the explosion at the end of Psychonauts.
- Based on the wording Fred uses to describe what he's going to do after waking up from his nap ("Strangle an orderly"), and given the fact that Fred chases him offscreen with arms extended during his last on-camera appearance, it's possible that Fred strangled Crispin until unconsciousness or death, though both possibilities are unconfirmed.
