D'Artagnan (spelt with the lowercase D), or Dart for short, was the original protagonist concept planned for Psychonauts. The main character was changed during development to Razputin, due to difficulties with animating Dart's hat. They also feared that the sway of the hat would be confused with a ponytail and people would think Dart was female.

Dart makes an appearance for a split second during the final cinematic, peeking out from inside an outhouse in the background. It is unknown if he is actually a camper or just a traveler passing by the camp.

Personality

Dart's personality in early development was cynical and uptight.

Appearance

D'Artagnan wears a green striped sleeping cap, a blue jacket, brown trousers, beige stockings, and brown shoes. He also wears a backpack. His skin is blue and his eyes are orange.

Psychic Powers

• Astral Projection: Dart can astral project into minds using a psycho portal.

Trivia

• Tim Schafer has mentioned that d'Artagnan's full name was originally meant to be "d'Artagnan Alstublieft", a name he'd come up with while traveling to Amsterdam not long before. "Alstublieft" is a Dutch word that means "please" or "here you go" when handing something to another person.
• When Coach Oleander tries to probe Raz's mind in the opening, he says that Raz's name starts with a "D", referencing Dart.
• Dart can be seen in the final slide of Coach Oleander's primal memories, where he is shown traversing the Basic Braining obstacle course. He can also be seen in one of the slides of Lungfishopolis primal memories.
• According to the Psychonauts retrospective, The Color of the Sky in Your World, he was re-designed due to being too odd-looking among the rest of the cast of characters.
• It is believed that Dart would have been more cynical than Raz. Compared to the more optimistic and friendly Raz, the dialogue used for Richard Horvitz when he auditioned for Dart had him look down on the camp and campers for focusing on mental basket weaving and themselves instead of trying to become Psychonauts.
• Unlike Raz, Dart has four fingers on each hand instead of five.
• In Psychonauts 2, Terryl, a worker in the Motherlobe's Psychoisolation Chamber, lists d'Artagnan as a possible name for Raz while she is trying to remember him post-game.
