Dog Painters

Edgar’s only friends. They live in his head and whisper scary things at him whenever he tries to sleep at night.

–Character blurb from the Old Psychopedia.

Trapped inside the alleys of Black Velvetopia, dog artists reside in here and sell magical paintings. The following is a list of all Dog Painters, a chain of characters from Psychonauts.

Saint Bernard[]

Streetpainter stbernard

Born for the Highlands, Forced to the Lowlands

The humble of the group and the very first artist to meet in this journey of retrieving all Queens for Edgar Teglee. He sells two magic paintings which are: an archway that opens an exit from the alleyway to the main street that costs 0 arrowheads and a rose that can be used on the ladies peeking through the windows of the street to hide temporarily from El Odio, which costs around 5 arrowheads. He offers some background to Razputin about the place, specially with how El Odio has imprisoned (forced everyone) to hide into their houses or the alleyways to escape from being gored by the furious and endless rampage of the bull.

Collie[]

A Canine of Culture with Refined Taste in Art

Being trapped for quite a while has affected him both positively and negatively; he has expanded his knowledge in arts but he has become way too attached to his creations is hard for him to not sell them as the best thing ever painted in the world. He’s the second artist Raz gets to know a little further into the town, although he sells a similar rose painting to his st. bernard friend, he on the other hand sells the painting of a guitar that its strings can be used to climb certain upper areas. It seems Collie has gotten customers from time to time, since he has heard about the scandal involving the famous painter Edgar, his now ex-wife Lampita Pasionado and the town’s matador Dingo Inflagrante, which he tells to Raz once he buys one of his art works.

Dalmatian[]

Streetpainter dalmation

World’s most self-deprecating Artist

Never satisfied with any of his works; Dalmatian has learn new different ways to scare his customers by presenting his paintings as the worst nightmare that has been made. He on the other hand is the most self-aware that his surroundings are made up from the romanization of Edgar’s high school memories; when Raz reaches his vending booth, the Dalmatian clears his mind out of the confusing story he has been told about by the Collie. Just like his comrades, he has to offer at least two paintings; a vine that goes even further than the guitar in terms of height (especially helpful to reach Edgar’s Secret Garden) and a window that leads to a secret route that reaches the end part of the main street.

Bulldog[]

Streetpainter bulldog

The Cowardly yet Perseverant Artist

Do not blame him, no one would love the idea to be put on such difficult mission where your is near the claws of the cold death. The Bulldog was commissioned by the matador but he can’t finish the advert since it’s positioned right in the street where El Odio is constantly passing through; Raz notices this and he is willing to give the fearful dog a hand. Once given the secret weapon of the matador to confuse his opponents, Raz stuns the bull so the dog painter finishes his task and the two are awarded with: the bulldog gaining his freedom from painting that advert, and Razputin a mere golden helmet that increases his Astral Projection Layers.

Trivia[]

  • While in the painting they’re shown to be working on sees Raz as himself, through Clairvoyance they see him much differently
    • Saint Bernard sees the boy as an art model, while the Collie only sees him as a filthy pig, the Dalmatian sees Raz as a judge since he believes his paintings will be severely criticized; meanwhile the bulldog sees Raz as a tourist.
  • Harming them in any way with any PSI-Powers will cause them to make dog-like grunts.
  • The Dog Painters are a reference to the painting "A Friend in Need" (commonly referred to as "Dogs Playing Poker") by C.M. Collidge. The poodle is the only dog not included in this world.
    • If the player revisits this mental world, in Edgar’s Sanctuary they’ll be playing with Edgar poker precisely.
    • A common subject of the black velvet artstyle is dogs playing poker, which is why they feature the dogs in Edgar’s mind as painters.
  • Unused dialogues reveals some of the paintings they used to sell were swapped at some point. Example: Saint Bernard was meant sell the guitar, Dalmatian was intended to sell the rose and the Collie was planned to sell the window.
    • There’s also unused dialogues for the Dog Painters interacting with unused items like a feather and luggage. Possible the crow feather and the emotional baggage tag were intended to be items Raz could put on his inventory in this level.
