Dog Painters
We're trapped in here, son. Art is our only escape.

–St. Bernard

St

One of the dog painters, St. Bernard.

The Dog Painters are a chain of dog artists found in Black Velvetopia in Psychonauts. They sell paintings in exchange for arrowheads.

Description[]

Edgar’s only friends. They live in his head and whisper scary things at him whenever he tries to sleep at night.

There are a total of four within Black Velvetopia. Each of them sells paintings that may be purchased for a certain amount of arrow heads. These paintings can be placed on specific walls and will spring to life, giving Raz a new item or a way to reach a new area.

Old Psychopedia description

The dog paintings are mental figures living in Edgar's mind. Their paintings can be bought for a certain amount of arrowheads by Razputin to help further his progress in Edgar's mind. The paintings are a Rose, an Alleyway, a Guitar, a Window, and a Vine. When placed in certain areas, the paintings will increase in size, and Raz can scale them like ladders or get transported to hidden areas. The Dogs are trapped within the side alleys in fear of being trampled (or even gored) by El Odio.

Now that takes me back, poker night with the guys... man I miss those dogs.

Hello! Artist! Delicate hands here!

–Collie

Collie is the second dog painter. He sells the Guitar painting for 40 arrowheads and the rose painting for 20 arrowheads. Collie is mildly rude and loves gossip, but he won't admit it. He is very sarcastic and has a high opinion on his art.

Dalmatian[]

Don't tell anyone who painted these, okay?

–Dalmatian

Dalmatian is the third dog painter. He sells the vine painting for 75 arrowheads and the window painting for 55 arrowheads. Dalmatian is a very self-deprecating artist with low self-esteem. He likely represents Edgar's internal self-doubt. Like Collie, he is also very sarcastic.

Bulldog[]

There's no way I'm going out there man.

–Bulldog

Bulldog is the fourth dog painter. He does not sell any paintings, but instead paints Dingo's advertisement. Bulldog is worrisome and skittish. He is apprehensive to paint Dingo's advertisement for fear of getting trampled in the streets by El Odio. He is good friends with the other dog painters.

Trivia[]

  • There are four dogs in total, each in different breeds: Saint Bernard, Collie, Dalmatian, and Bulldog.
  • They all paint a picture of Raz as their idle animations.
  • The dog painters are a reference to the painting "A Friend in Need" (commonly referred to as "Dogs Playing Poker") by C.M. Collidge. The poodle is the only dog not included in this world.
  • Clairvoyance shows that St. Bernard sees Raz as an art model, Collie sees Raz as a filthy pig, Dalmatian sees Raz as a judge, and Bulldog sees Raz as a tourist.
  • If Raz returns to Black Velvetopia after finishing the level, Edgar can be found playing a game of poker with the dog painters.
  • A common subject of the black velvet art style is dogs playing poker, which is why they feature in Edgar's mind as painters.
