Half-A-Mind is a type of collectible seen around various Mental Worlds in Psychonauts 2. Collecting and conjoining 2 of these, aside from making them in a full brain, it allows Raz to expand his Mental Health pool by one brain.

Description[]

Similar to the Emotional Baggage, the Half-A-Minds are collectible items which seem to be sentient figures roaming different areas of a person’s mind. While it’s not clear what they could represent specifically, their appearance in a person’s mind is an indicator of their actual psyche being present, which for example: explains why Loboto's Labyrinth and Lucrecia's Lament don’t have any, since these minds are mostly mental constructs made or highly modified by a foreign entity. Some few have even four of these Half-A-Minds such as Hollis' Hot Streak and PSI King's Sensorium. In this two cases it might have to do with their own respective minds being expanded thanks to in one case being manipulated through Mental Connection and the other thanks to the lack of body for so long and gaining its senses back once after being put into another body.

Ford's Fractured Mind has also four and with this one it reinforces the argument that, this item might be an elemental part of a person’s psyche; since each alter ego of Ford has one Half-A-Mind only. The explanation for collecting them increasing Raz’s mental health might have to do with something Ford mentioned when rebraining the campers back in Psychonauts: the Jarred Brains added the campers subconscious mental attention into Raz and consequently their energy would increase his mental heath potential. This applies here as well though in a more direct way and plus unlike the campers where each brain increased a unit, since in these individuals it is inside their minds they increase it by four units in total.

Locations[]

Hollis' Mind[]

  • Hollis' Classroom
    1. Morgue #1: You'll find the first half of this collectible as soon as you enter the Morgue area. This little guy is prancing in the middle of the room so just go and pick it up.[1]
    2. Morgue #2: In the same area, connect “Death” and “Victory” thought clouds, then connect to the new points to reach the platform with the second half-a-mind.
  • Hollis' Hot Streak
    1. Shattered Classroom #1: Use mental connection to reach the central platform. Look around to find a small platform that you can access from the central platform and grab this half-a-mind from there.
    2. Shattered Classroom #2: Make your way to the upper grappling points to reach a small platform that has this collectible. The grappling points aren't exactly out of the way as well so you'll find this platform easily while collecting the other figments along the way.
    3. Cardiology Backroom: After crossing the beginning section, look to your immediate left to find a lone green figment. Double-jump then glide to reach it. Collect the Half-a-mind dancing on the other end of the couch. Return to the main path and proceed forward.
    4. Maternity Backroom: Continue along the path until you find three small revolving chips with two exploding bulbs. Next, collect the fourth half-a-mind just prancing on the dice platform.

Compton's Cookoff[]

  1. Main Stage #1: For the first half-a-mind, you have to complete Round 1 within the time limit. Don’t worry since any mystery box you failed to open during your first visit will be unlocked automatically once you revisit this mental world (after defeating the bosses).
  2. Main Stage #2: The other half-a-mind is also inside another mystery box. This time, you have to complete Round 2 within the time limit.

PSI King's Sensorium[]

  1. Backstage: In the Backstage area, find the secret passage under a ramp on the right side of the stage. Follow the path to find a poster, burn the concert poster in front of the suitcase then turn around the corner to find a half-a-mind.
  2. Eye Shrine: After activating the first rainbow bridge, cross it, then look around the corner towards the two spinning fans to the left. You should see another half-a-mind in a scaffolding behind the spinning fan.
  3. Woods: Head to the waterfall to the left. You’ll need to slow down a log that’s falling down from the waterfall and use it as a platform to reach the collectible.
  4. Nose Mouth Shrine: Look at the paddle wheel to the left in the area where the instruments are. Jump to the platform with the spotlight. Operate it and point the beam of light to the rainbow triangle in the nearby tower to create a rainbow bridge.

Ford's Fractured Mind[]

  • Ford's Follicles
    1. Town Outskirts: You'll find this in plain sight after going through a barbershop corridor. There's also a memory vault near its location as well as two nearby figments.
  • Strike City
    1. Construction Site: Jump on a couple of red metal beams beside the elevator. (The half-a-mind is immediately visible from that location).
  • Cruller's Correspondence
    1. International Dead Letter Office: You'll find this near the end of this section, after going down the slope. You can find this half-a-mind on top of the shelf to the right.
  • Tomb of the Sharkophagus
    1. Tomb of the Sharkophagus: After entering the room and talking to Mail Clerk Ford, don't leave the room yet. Turn around and look for this half-a-mind to the left of the doorway.

Cassie's Collection[]

  1. Children's Corner: Make your way to the second floor where one of the important books are located. To the far side of the wall is a door where this collectible is hiding. You'll need the Mental Projection power.
  2. Literature Lane: Inside this location, you'll find this collectible at ground level, to the right side of the room. In other words, it can be seen laying on top of some piled books into the ground.

Bob's Bottles[]

  1. Otto's Island: In Bob’s Island, sail and look for a very small island occupied only by Otto. You’ll be able to spot the half-a-mind dancing behind a rock at the edge of the island.
  2. Viking Reception: Use the nearby dark thoughts to reach the oars of the viking ship. Alternatively, you can also just jump using the Levitation power’s Pouncy Ball to grab on the oar. Climb the net and you’ll see the item in the ship’s deck.

Fatherland Follies[]

  1. The Fall of Grulovia: Head to the plaza and go to the narrow space to the left of the plaza. You'll find this half-a-mind very hidden at the end of the path beside the water wheel.
  2. Life in Exile: Operate the control panel to control the props and backdrop of the interactive story of the Malik family's exile. The item is inside a hole at the "Desert Wasteland" backdrop, accommodate the props in the way you feel you can reach the inside of this hole and check the space behind the wall to find the half-a-mind.

Trivia[]

  • Half-A-Mind is one of three collectibles which Clairvoyance can be performed on. The others are the Emotional Baggage and Memory Vaults.
  • The concept for this collectible has notorious similarities and/or inspirations to the Jarred brains.
    • Both involve retrieving a brain and increasing a specific amount of health to Raz.
