The Luchadores are mini-bosses from Psychonauts fought in Black Velvetopia. They represent Edgar’s former wrestling team and the guilt he has about letting them down.
Backgrounds[]
The Luchadores are the mental replicas based on the memories Edgar Teglee has about his old wrestling comrades, but mostly embittered thanks to the strong feelings of guilt Edgar carries within heart by letting them down. During the time Edgar was in High School, he was the captain of his wrestling team, leading them all the way to the state semi-finals until one day he screwed up and cost the team the entire match and making them turn their backs on him. While it never is explicitly implied if they forgive Edgar, he still carried the sadness of failing to those who he once called friends.
Psychonauts[]
Each of these Luchadores reside in a part of Edgar’s mind that represent his memories of when he used to be a wrestler in high school, said memories take the form of wrestling rings which the stage is composed of a large version of the queens Edgar needs to build his house of cards. All of the Luchadores are in charge of guarding an specific type of card, example: Tiger guards the Queen of Clubs, Dragon the Queen of Hearts, Eagle the Queen of Diamonds and lastly Cobra defending the Queen of Spades. In order to obtain them, Razputin has to fight each and one of these wrestlers and win their respective matches; if he loses he gets kicked out and has to do a rematch, but if he wins, Raz obtains the queen and each of the Luchadores will move to the secret garden in the Collie’s Alley which can be visited after each fight or after revisiting the mind.
Appearance[]
They wear outfits themed after Edgar's black vest animal symbols, and while all of them share a similar appearance (the brick-shape with a slight bit of chubbiness body followed with the fairly small arms and legs, and the wrestling belts that represents them with a signature picture), truth to be told, they present a very different color scheme and patterns on their wrestling uniforms. Which goes as follows:
Tiger: Has a typical orange fur with black stripes on the arms and the back along with green eyes.
Dragon: Presents red skin and white lines trying to mimic the shapes of the fire and has yellow eyes.
Eagle: Presents in the front of his body white and violet colors and his back pure dark with some violet lines representing feathers along with red eyes.
Cobra: Showcases a skin like the one of a real cobra but with a horseshoe symbol on the back and having yellow eyes like Dragon’s ones.
Personalities[]
The Luchadores act as how Edgar thinks they might’ve think of him after losing the state semi-finals; acting very rudely but amplified to a point of being cartoonishly nasty. Tiger is rather dramatic and over-the-top in his speech patterns, Dragon goes by an aggressive and prideful manner, Eagle goes for a “true neutral” attitude, not evil nor good enough; Cobra’s demeanor however is the most obnoxious out of all four Luchadores, acting as an arrogant bully who doesn’t even view Raz as himself but as Edgar in his weakest point. Though they turn their defeats into something positive (in this case gardening), they are indifferent to Raz, only responding with a grunt if he tries to speak with them, still, at least it seems they are in much better terms with Edgar now.

–Ford Cruller advicing Raz from the bacon about Cobra.
While the Luchadores have different signature moves that requires different strategies to defeat, the fights in general are typically the same. Raz can use Invisibility to sneak up on the wrestlers and hit them, use the Shield to block attacks, or use Levitation to jump above and Palm Bomb them. Telekinesis can be a secondary option as well by the fact that it stuns them for at least 2 seconds since they are forced to sit on the ground. Cobra, however, is the big difference in the group. He can only be defeated by breaking his concentration with a Confusion Grenade, then attacking while he is vulnerable.
Abilities and Health[]
Luchador Tiger[]
- Paws of Fury: Tiger swipes frontally with his claws a total of 4 times in a row. Getting scratch will cost Raz between 3 hit points or 4 hit points of his mental health.
- Tiger Pounce: Tiger gets on all fours and locks his focus into Raz to pounce at him. It’ll cost Raz 3 hit points of his mental health and getting knocked out if he gets tackled. Dodging or blocking the attack will leave Tiger vulnerable for about 4 seconds.
- Paw Push: Tiger while in all fours swipes his right arm frontally to push back Raz and perform his special move; this attack costs Raz 1 hit point of his mental health and it can be continuously done if he keeps stumbling into Tiger.
Luchador Dragon[]
- Burning Fists: Dragon jumps and swipes forward 2 times in a row, finishing by creating a big fireball with both hands. Receiving all this will cost Raz between 3 hit points or 4 hit points of his mental health.
- Dragon Roar: Dragon roars loudly, releasing a conflagration below him that glues Raz into the ground, making it easy to launch himself towards Raz which will cost him 3 hit points of his mental health and getting knocked out for 4 seconds.
Luchador Eagle[]
- Wings of Discombobulation: Eagle double ear slaps Raz frontally and its followed by multi-kicking midair, which will cost Raz between 3 hit points or 4 hit points of his mental health.
- Eagle Dive: Eagle jumps into the air and stays there for 5 seconds before dropping down onto Raz. Using shield will stun Eagle for about 4 seconds otherwise it will knock out Raz and cost him 3 hit points of his mental health.
Luchador Cobra[]
- Pokes of Doom: Cobra extremely fast pokes Raz 3 times in a row, with the last one using both hands; all this costing him between 3 hit points or 4 hit points of his mental health.
- Head of Confusion: Cobra detaches the head from his body which causes the screen to be covered with a green filter and invert the controls for the player. Then launches himself towards Raz, head butts him and costing Raz 3 hit points of his mental health.
- The King of Concentration: Cobra reflexes are fast that no attack from Raz can hurt him, sometimes he can block the attack and immediately perform any of his other abilities to hurt Raz.
General Tactics[]
- Dash: The Luchadores will occasionally rush towards Razputin in a very quick speed, in an attempt to attack him with any of their abilities.
- Piledriver: The Luchadores grab Raz up close, put him upside down and slam his head into the ground, knocking him out and costing Raz 3 hit points of his mental health.
- Tossed Away: The Luchadores pick up Raz, raises him high and then dumps Raz into the ground which knocks out and costs him 3 hit points of his mental health.
Similar to Den Mother their health varies on the PSI-power used on them, for instance: When using the average PSI-Punch it only takes 16 hits, by using Pyrokinesis it requires a total of 61 burnts (6 times using the ability on them), If charging Palm bomb enough with either Levitation or not it only takes 7 hits and lastly by using the reflection damage of shield takes 27 hits. In comparison to most other bosses for being just mini bosses they have a solid amount of health.
Wrestling Announcer[]
He’s a mental figure who introduces the wrestlers as well as directly or indirectly offering Raz some tips if he is losing. His appearance during the actual game is never reveal but his talksprite icon shows a bit how he looks. He has purplish pink skin, a faint black mustache and shows five fingers in his only visible hand.
Etymology[]
Luchadores is the plural word of “Luchador”, spanish word which translates as "Wrestler" in this context. Their names as well as their boss concepts are heavily inspired in the Mexican sport called "Lucha Libre" a variant of wrestling.

Trivia[]
- When Clairvoyance is used on them, Tiger sees Raz as a weak antelope, Dragon sees Raz as a wimpy warrior wearing cardboard armor, Eagle sees Raz as a worm, and Cobra sees Raz as a nerdy version of Edgar holding his hands up as though to prevent an attack.
- When Raz asks Saint Bernard where to find the four queen cards, he warns Raz to not bother because they are guarded by some "nasty figures", by which he is referring to the Luchadores.
- Along with the Dalmatian they’re the only Dog Painters that seem to acknowledge their existence.
- The invincibility cheat doesn't work during the Luchador fights, mostly since the health functions in a different way.
- All four Luchadores are a palette swap of each other. They all have the same model figure, but have different colors and patterns.
- Oddly enough, their official renders contrasts a lot from their actual in-game models, examples: Eagle and Cobra customs resemble more the animals they represent.
- Dragon may be a reference to Mr. Satan from the series Dragon Ball, as he has a similar voice to the Funimation dub portrayal and refers to superhuman abilities (invisibility) a "trick".
- When Raz asks Ford Cruller about Eagle, they have an argument about whether or not "Ca-caw" is a hyphenated word, or if it is actually two words. The two continue to exchange the hyphenated words "half-wit" and "back-breaking".
- The Luchadores have four variants of the punching animation which are: punching frontally, from behind and from the sides (both left and right).
- A little bit weird considering most bosses only have one damage animation, although the others that have a similar trait are the Nightmare and the Final Boss.
- Tiger appears in the Psychonauts recap animation at the start of Psychonauts 2.
- Very old footage by GameSpy which was uploaded in IGN's channel presents a gameplay against one of the Luchadores, this one being Tiger.
- Some stuff to be noted is the much low volume boss theme, Tiger resisting 13 punches instead of 16, and the most striking which is the constant cheering from the audience which gets louder if either Raz or the luchador hits each other. The footage in question.
