Lucrecia Mux

Stay away from the water!

–Lucrecia Mux

Lucrecia Mux (née Galochio), also known as Nona Aquato, or simply Nona, is a former member of the Psychic Seven. She is the aunt of Augustus Aquato, sister to Marona Aquato, widow of Gelsin Mux, girlfriend of Ford Cruller, and great-aunt to the Aquato children. She acts as the mother to Augustus and grandmother to his children.

Appearance[]

Young[]

Lucrecia typically wore large hoop earrings and a headscarf. She was tall and thin, with very thick eyeliner, thin high set eyebrows, and curly hair.

Old[]

In her old age, Lucrecia is a short, hunched over elderly woman who wears a ragged blue cloak. She has white hair that she keeps up in a large messy-looking bun.

Personality[]

Lucrecia Mux was a compassionate and intelligent woman in her youth. The other members of the Psychic Six, particularly Ford Cruller, have fond memories of Lucrecia from the time they used to work together. However, the experiments they did together paired with the trauma of what happened in Grulovia changed Lucrecia into a cold, indiscriminate murderer, the villain known as Maligula.

After Ford used the Astralathe to lock away Maligula, Lucrecia went back to her usual personality while she took on the role of her sister Marona, forming new happy memories with Augustus and later, his wife and children. In old age, "Nona" is very caring towards her family, if a bit scatterbrained and overly cautious of water due to Ford's conditioning. She occasionally feels frustrated as she tries, and fails, to remember her real past.

After the events of Psychonauts 2, Lucrecia is aware of the truth again, but has permanently returned to being a mild-mannered old woman.

Story[]

Background[]

Lucrecia was born in Grulovia, along with her sister Marona. She eventually married a man named Gelsin Mux, while her sister married a circus ringmaster named Lazarus Aquato. Gelsin was sadly killed in a war at one point, which prompted Lucrecia to flee her country. Eventually, she met Otto Mentallis, who took an interest in her Hydrokinesis ability for its capacity to swiftly and easily flush out Psitanium from the quarry he was researching in Green Needle Gulch. Otto introduced Lucrecia to his research partner, Ford Cruller. The two fell in love, and one night snuck out to go bowling, where they had their first kiss. As the team grew, they eventually began experimenting with their psychic abilities, sometimes going so far as to experiment on themselves using a device called the Astralathe, a device designed to alter a person's psyche, in order to broaden their consciousness and knowledge of how their minds worked.

One day, war was once again declared in Lucrecia's homeland of Grulovia, and she insisted on setting off to defend it. Ford warned her not to, as the experiments had left her mind open and vulnerable, but she didn't listen, as she had to make sure her sister was alright. Once in Grulovia, she rescued the young prince, Gristol Malik, from a group of invading soldiers. This landed her the position of Gzar Theodore Malik's Minister of War. Lucrecia's ability to provoke floods on command proved a potent weapon for the Gzar, even though he seemed to hate her for being more popular with the people than him, and Grulovia won the war soon after. Throughout all of this, Lucrecia wrote regularly to her friends.

However, things took a turn once the war was over. The citizens of Grulovia, including Lazarus and Morona, began to protest against the Malik's unfair reign. Gzar Theodore, concerned only with his own power, ordered Lucrecia to deal with them. As the protests continued, Gzar Theodore ordered Lucrecia to increase her tactics against the protestors, resulting in them becoming more and more cruel. This caused the protestors to give Lucrecia the nickname "Maligula", which part of her liked the sound of. Eventually, Gzar Theodore ordered Lucrecia to deal with the protestors once and for all, causing Lucrecia to warn Lazarus not to let Marona attend the next rally. At first, Lucrecia attempted to disband the protestors by making it rain on them, but the Gzar pushed her to turn up the pressure. The heavy rainfall that resulted ended up breaking the dam and drowning all of the protestors. Lucrecia then discovered that her Marona did attend the rally, and that she accidentally killed her. Consumed by grief, a murderous primal part of Lucrecia's mind was unshackled, and she retreated into her Maligula persona.

The Psychic Six, Lucrecia's former friends, were then called in by the international community to deal with Maligula, in what would be the first mission of international peacekeeping for the organization that would later be called the Psychonauts. However, the Psychic Six didn't want to hurt Lucrecia, and instead tried to restrain her and bring her back to her senses. Helmut Fullbear and Cassie O'Pia tried talking to her, the former making a heart-felt monologue about how important she was to them. This did snap Lucrecia out of it, although not for very long.

Eventually, after the battle was over, Ford took Maligula back to their home base. Unable to harm the love of his life, he used the Astralathe, to seal her Maligula persona away and make her believe she was her deceased sister Marona, as well as implanting a fear of water to prevent her from remembering who she really was. Ford then look Lucrecia's nephew, Augustus, out of the orphanage he was in, and used the Astralathe to make him forget about his mother's death, as well as imprinting the idea that Lucrecia was always his mother. He then left the two in their family's circus, where Lucrecia continuously told the false narrative that Ford implanted in her that Maligula was from a family of fortune telling psychics from a rival circus, who cursed them to die in water, a story he perpetuated by telling it to his own children.

Lucrecia fitted in well with her new family, helping sew the tents, stretching the children, and constantly warning them to stay away from the water. However, as time went on and Lucrecia got older, the persona that Ford put in her head started to crumble. She would start to do things like wander off into the woods, subconsciously trying to reach the base in Green Needle Gulch, or suddenly get sudden bouts of sadness only to snap back to her usual persona before she could figure out why she was feeling that way.

One day, Lucrecia was sitting sadly by herself near a lake. As she looked in the water, this triggered a memory, and she saw the reflection of her dead sister staring back at her. As if in a trance, Lucrecia went looking for help. She knew that several of Augustus' children were psychics, but chose Razputin, because of his existing passion for True Psychic Tales magazine. Lucrecia borrowed a top hat and false beard from a fellow circus performer, the bearded lady, and approached Raz after one of their shows to hand him a pamphlet for Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. This act prompted Raz to run away and attend Whispering Rock in hopes of becoming a Psychonaut, setting in motion the events of the first game. Once Lucrecia had done this, she suddenly snapped back to her usual persona, confused as to why she was wearing the outfit.

Psychonauts[]

Lucrecia appears on a carved portrait in the Reception Area at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. She also appears as the mysterious stranger in Raz's memory vault, Razputin's Getaway.

Psychonauts 2[]

Lucrecia initially appears in Psychonauts 2 under the guise of Razputin's grandmother, Nona Aquato. She joined the rest of the family in coming to the Motherlobe to support Raz. The Aquatos can be found camping out at the nearby Questionable Area.

Razputin learns of Lucrecia and her past with the Psychonauts while he tries to repair Ford Cruller's broken mind. She appears in many of the memory vaults of Ford and the other Psychic Six members. Eventually, things fall into place, and Raz stumbles on the truth Ford tried to bury: Lucrecia, Maligula, and Nona Aquato are the same person, Ford's lover who turned genocidal and who he tried to brainwash and hide away from the world as Razputin's grandmother.

Horrified, Raz runs off to the Aquatos' camp immediately to find Nona. Ford, now sane again, stops him to prevent Maligula from potentially coming out again. The two realize Lucrecia has wandered off to the Psychic Six' old base of operations in Green Needle Gulch, and set off to find her, agreeing on the way to fire up the Astralathe used to cause this mess in the first place again, in hopes of casting Maligula into the deepest recesses of Lucrecia's mind where she belongs, before she remembers too much.

When the Astralathe is ready, all of the members of the Psychic Six reunite and work together to power and stabilize the device. Razputin and Ford enter Lucrecia's mind to take care of matters. They first find the Flea Circus, a construct Ford put in place to keep Lucrecia under the illusion that she is the Aquatos' grandmother. Raz, having crushed his own flea double, performs some circus tricks to keep Lucrecia stable. However, she then tells Raz she has a secret to show him, and performs the high dive into a teacup, disappearing from the construct. Raz and Ford follow, and end up in Nona's Quilts, an extension to Lucrecia's mind beyond the construct that she cultivated in secret. This forest, stitched together out of fabric and sewing supplies and representative of Nona's happy memories with the Aquatos, eventually leads to the Mental Dam where Maligula, in actuality a murderous primal part of her mind, remains trapped. Ford and Raz prepare for a fight, until Raz is suddenly ejected from Lucrecia's mind.

Raz finds himself awoken by Truman Zanotto, who is in actuality Gzesarevich Gristol Malik's brain in Truman's body. Raz and Lili dive into his mind to discover his plan to revive Maligula and return to the throne he thinks he deserves. By the time they come back, Ford ejects from Lucrecia's mind, having failed to contain Maligula. Lucrecia becomes upset at all the people in the room bringing back unpleasant memories, and fully loses control to Maligula.

In the ensuing chaos, most of the people who are present are caught in Maligula's torrents of water, but Raz manages to get away to enlist his family's help. The Aquatos perform the "Devil's Firehose", a trick Donatella came up with, to launch Raz squarely at Lucrecia's head so he can finish the fight Ford started.

Back inside Lucrecia's mind, things now resemble broken pieces of Grulovia surrounded by water. Raz engages Maligula in battle, receiving help from the other interns. Eventually, Lucrecia's conscious mind breaks away from Maligula and gives Raz a powerful Psychic boost that makes him much larger, giving him the strength to punch Maligula into the void of Lucrecia's subconscious once and for all.

After the battle, the Psychonauts agree to cover up the truth about the reformed Lucrecia. She goes to stay in her hut in Green Needle Gulch with Ford Cruller, and her part of the mural at the Motherlobe depicting the Psychic Seven is finally uncovered for all to see.

Relationships[]

Gelsin Mux[]

Gelsin was Lucrecia's first husband. Nothing is known about him, aside from that he died young in a war.

Marona Aquato[]

Marona is Lucrecia's sister. Not much is known of their relationship, but judging by Lucrecia's grief over her sister's death, she clearly cared a lot for her. Despite this, Marona attended peaceful protests against the Gzar of Grulovia, even though Lucrecia was working for the Gzar.

Ford Cruller[]

Ford is Lucrecia’s boyfriend and fellow member of the Psychic Seven. The two were deeply in love, sharing their first kiss at a bowling alley. When Lucretia went on a rampage, Ford could not bring himself to kill her. After the events of the second game, she moves in with him.

Lucretia implies that she and Ford "used to fool around in the beanbag chairs" implying the two have had sex,

Augustus Aquato[]

Augustus is Lucrecia's nephew, whom she raised as her son due to Ford's conditioning. They care deeply for each other, even when the conditioning wears off and Augustus sees the life he led to be a lie.

Donatella Aquato[]

Donatella is Lucrecia's niece-in-law.

Frazie Aquato[]

Frazie is Lucrecia's eldest great-niece. Lucrecia secretly knew about Frazie's psychic powers, but chose Raz over her to anonymously inform about Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp.

Queepie Aquato[]

Queepie is Lucrecia's youngest great-nephew. Lucrecia calls Queepie her second favorite grandchild.

Razputin Aquato[]

Razputin is Lucrecia's middle great-nephew. In a moment of great confusion and frustration, she reaches out to Raz to help her make sense of what happened, setting him on the path to becoming a Psychonaut. Raz and "Nona", who acted as his grandmother for his whole life, love and look out for each other, though she often confuses Raz for Dion or Queepie.

Mirtala Aquato[]

Mirtala is Lucrecia's youngest grand-niece, and constantly tries to gain her approval with her acrobatics.

Dion Aquato[]

Dion is Lucrecia's eldest grand-nephew. Under the conditioning, she tells Razputin that he is her favorite grandchild, thinking she is talking to Dion.

Etymology[]

Lucrecia Mux shares a similar name and portrait to Lucretia Mott, a famous feminist leader. The name Lucrecia also stems from the Latin word for "wealth". "Nonna" also means 'grandmother' in Italian.

Psychic Powers[]

  • Hydrokinesis: Nona is an extremely advanced user of hydrokinesis, moreso in her "Maligula" personality.
  • Levitation: In her mental realm, Nona is able to propel herself and Ford high into the air. When her Maligula personality takes over again, she begins floating in the air.
  • PSI energy transfer: Nona transfers her PSI energy to Raz to fight Maligula.
  • Astral Projection: Lucrecia used to use astral projection with the Astralathe.
  • Cryokinesis: Being a master at hydrokinesis, she is a proficient user of cryokinesis as well.

Trivia[]

  • Lucrecia's portrait on the Motherlobe mural is intentionally obscured because of the damage her alter-ego, Maligula, caused. It becomes uncovered again in the post-game.
  • Lucrecia tells Raz she could have also picked Frazie to give the Whispering Rock Pamphlet to, but Razputin's obsession with his Psychonaut comic books made him a stronger candidate.
  • Nona wears dentures.[1]
  • Cassie's Collection features a paper memory of how Lucrecia used to be, who acknowledges the terrible damage she's done when Raz tries to talk to her.
