...and THAT is how you perform the advanced psychic ability known as MENTAL CONNECTION.

Hollis Forsythe

Mental Connection is the psychic power to connect disparate ideas together and link them in someone's mind. Although the power as taught by Hollis was only meant for connecting ideas together, Raz accidentally discovers the ability can be used to move him closer to thoughts, allowing him to float inside them. It can also be used on enemies. It appears as a grappling hook-like beam. It can cause unintentional (or intentional) negative psychological effects if two harmful thoughts are connected together[1]. It can also lead to euphoric breakthroughs and an increase in mental health. Raz learns this ability in Hollis' mind in Psychonauts 2.

Upgrades[]

  • Base Power - Grapple between thoughts to make connections.
  • Sucker Punch - Dishes out a free knuckle sandwich to incoming grappled enemies for bonus damage.
  • Think Fast - Cooldowns between enemy grapples are shortened.
  • Dark Thoughts - Connect to Dark Thoughts to reach previously untraversable areas.

  • Food For Thought - Each Mental Connection node has a chance to restore a little Mental Energy!
  • Heavy Thoughts - Use Mental Connections to anchor your enemies in place!
  • Mental Tax - Making Mental Connections has a chance to tax the mind, causing it to emit Psitantium!
  • Brain Drain - Grabbing an enemy with Mental Connection will deplete their health!

Uses[]

  • Mental connection is useful for traversing large areas.
  • If Raz grapples onto a smaller enemy using mental connection, it will pull the enemy toward him. If he grapples a larger enemy, it will pull Raz toward that enemy.

Strategies[]

  • Time bubble can be used to slow down a large enemy from far away, and then mental connection can be used to quickly pull Raz toward that enemy. Once close, he can use Psi Punch to deal massive damage.

Psychonauts 2[]

In Psychonauts 2 it is revealed that Hollis Forsythe attempted to use Mental Connection to rewire her medical professor, Dr. Potts', personality, but accidentally caused him to have a mental break. Raz also uses this ability to try and rewire Hollis' thoughts in Psychonauts 2, but ends up dramatically impacting her mental health in the process, as well as indirectly giving her a gambling addiction.

Dark Thoughts[]

Dark thoughts are purple colored versions of white thoughts. They are hidden in minds and connecting to them can lead to secret areas, provided the player has upgraded this ability for this to work.

Trivia[]

  • Mental Connection has aspects of telekinesis and mind control.
  • Mental connection can be used along with Archetype to indefinitely bounce on water. While the archetype is summoned, Raz can bounce on water and use mental connection to grab onto him. Doing this will restart the "bounce" sequence.
