Monstroboto

RUB A DUB DUB, WHO’S IN MY TUB?

–Loboto (Monstroboto).

Monstroboto or in-game referred as Loboto, is a mental figure that resembles a massive version of Dr. Caligosto Loboto. He represents an immoral part of the dentist's psyche that rampages around under the sea of Loboto's Leviathan, at least until Razputin restores his Moral Compass to its proper place.

Appearance[]

Monstroboto is pretty much a replica of the real Dr. Loboto, including his characteristic shower cap, mechanical eyes with red and green lens; and the wooden prosthetic with three pronged claws. However the most evident change is the lack of clothing, this makes much clear how his clawed left arm looks and works. As for his voice, is much lower-pitched, having a echo-like effect to it at the end of each sentence.

Background[]

Monstroboto is the one and only boss fight in Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin, ironically being both first and last encounter in the game. He is faced in the mind of Loboto, inside a large bathtub with a small ship in the middle. He threatens Raz and First Mate Loboto, a mental figure from the Mental World who’s terrified of the giant creature which he nicknamed as the "Cursed Soulless Leviathan". Monstroboto will throw plastic ducks and ships at the boat crew throughout the boss fight as well as covering his head with a strainer from time to time.

After the moral compass is retrieve from the inside of a uniquely looking Memory Vault and is put back in its place, Monstroboto retreats permanently into the depths of the ocean (allegorically the mind of Loboto).

Personality[]

Considering that Monstroboto is technically the psychopathic manchild tendencies Loboto has, he presents a very childish attitude and seems to love playing with his bath toys even though he can be a little too rough. He however only wants anyone around to play under his rules, most notorious of this mannerism is when burning his cap. First Mate Loboto even describes him as having a child-like personality; and it seems that the reason for this is since Monstroboto is the result of Dr. Loboto’s lobotomy thanks to his parents.

Strategy[]

Okay, first mate Loboto, if Monstroboto comes back up, do that trick to slow down time again, okay? I’m going to need all the time I can get.

–Razputin Aquato.

To defeat him, Raz must burn his shower cap using pyrokinesis. This will cause Monstroboto to retreat underwater momentarily until he returns holding a strainer above his head. Raz must shoot down the bath objects that Monstroboto throws during the fight before they hit the ship. Raz will then get an opportunity to blast the strainer off his head. Once his shower cap is revealed again, Raz must burn it again. This process repeats until Monstroboto's brain is exposed. Once Raz shoots his brain, Monstroboto loses consciousness.

Attacks and Health[]

  • Bath Fight: Monstroboto grabs plenty of objects from undersea (bottom of the bathtub) and throws them at the ship. These vary from bath toys to soaps, some can be dragged with TK and then blast them with PSI-Blast to crash them into Loboto’s face, some need to be burn quickly or directly blasted.
  • Strainer Cap: For most of the fight, Monstroboto covers his shower cap and brain with a giant strainer that can only be knocked out by sending back the objects the boss sent to Raz and his crew, except in the last point of the fight where he only removes it if he gets pissed off.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: Upon setting on fire his shower cap, the boss will retreat temporarily and sink himself into the water in order to set it off. By resuming the combat, he will pick a strainer on top of his head with one of his hands.

Combining the objects that must be sent back to him, the times his shower cap must be burn and the last hit directly into his brain with PSI-Blast, Monstroboto only requires a total of 9 hits to defeat. Suffering the same case as the Mega Censor; bosses that have a large appearance but their resistance is not that powerful compared to other smallish bosses.

Trivia[]

  • As stated before, Monstroboto represents the unhealthy version of Dr. Loboto, most likely created from the mental deterioration caused by the ice-pick lobotomy he received as a child.
  • Monstroboto's name is a reference to Monstro from Disney's 1940 animated feature film Pinocchio, which translates to "monster" in Portuguese and archaic Italian.
  • He’s one of the few bosses along side the Judge and Panic Attack that their fights take place at the very beginning of the mind.
  • Despite his cap being mostly burn during the encounter, after getting and putting the compass back on its place, Monstroboto will temporarily appear sinking into the water with his shower cap restored.
