| Psychoisolation |
The Psychoisolation facility is a building located at Psychonauts headquarters, across the Quarry from the Motherlobe.
This facility's main purpose is housing dangerous or unstable psychics, whether enemy or otherwise, to prevent them from doing any harm to others. However, the building is also regularly used by Psychonauts who feel overwhelmed, such as Compton Boole.
Description[]
The Psychoisolation facility is a small tower with a globe-shaped containment chamber set on top. Within the top chamber is a cell surrounded by a bubble of psychic energy that cancels out psychic abilities. This cell has the same effect as a Geodesic Psychoisolation Chamber, though without the sensory deprivation, as one can still easily see inside, and it's possible to talk to the occupant through a slot in the door. The chamber is furnished comfortably for a more-long-term stay, possibly by Compton Boole, who spends so much time there that it is officially listed as his office outside of Astral Lanes.
Underneath the chamber itself is a small reception area, accessible through a door in the floor with a ThinkerPrint Reader. This area houses little else than a reception desk. It is typically occupied by Terryl, who will enthusiastically greet most guests, feeling rather isolated herself at her workstation. A levitation lift takes visitors up to the containment cell.
Story[]
Background[]
Otto Mentallis most likely designed the facility based on improvements made to his earlier GPC design. Psychoisolation was built sometime after the construction and opening of the Motherlobe.
When his friend Cassie O'Pia left the Psychonauts, Agent Compton Boole suffered a breakdown and became unable to stop himself from hearing the thoughts of all humans and animals in the vicinity. He committed himself to Psychoisolation for everyone's protection. Stable enough when only visited by one or two people, he settled into quiet semi-retirement in confinement. He decorated the cell with his own personal effects, including memorabilia from his time with the Senior League bowling club. He also set up the middle of the room with a chess board.
Psychonauts 2[]
The interior of the chamber.
When Raz came to Compton to borrow his Senior Bowling League membership card to get access to one of Ford Cruller's personalities, he found the old agent casually playing chess against Harold. When asked about the card, Compton initially refused, as it was a memento of his dear friend Cassie O'Pia. He agreed to help Raz if he would help him find out what happened to Cassie, sending him into the Forgetful Forest to recover a bee he could question. Unaware of Compton's mental stability, Raz returned with three bees, and Compton is quickly overwhelmed by all of the "voices" generated by having so many thoughts in the same place at the same time. Raz entered Compton's mind to help restore his mental stability, and Compton thanked him by giving him the club card before leaving the facility, following the bees to find Cassie.
After the ending of the game, the Psychonauts imprisoned Gristol Malik in the facility for safekeeping, despite not being a psychic. He awaits therapy from Sasha Nein, while still loudly singing his propaganda.
Trivia[]
- Aside from Compton, Terryl tells Raz in the post-game that Hollis Forsythe is another regular at the Psychoisolation facility. She checks in whenever she suffers a migraine.
