Those of you who fight well, you will find yourselves on the path to becoming international secret agents. In other words, Psychonauts! The rest of you...will die!

Coach Oleander

The Psychonauts. We're not here to change people's minds. We're not here to fix people. We're here to help people fight their own demons.

–Hollis Forsythe, second in command at the Psychonauts

The Psychonauts are an elite group of international secret agents who work with the federal government to keep peace around the world. They also investigate Unregistered Paranormal Entities, among other duties relating to psychic research. Most members, though not all, have psychic abilities. Their headquarters is called the Motherlobe, which is located in what used to be the largest Psitanium mine in the world. Truman Zanotto is the current grand head of the Psychonauts, and Hollis Forsythe is its second, or "lesser" head.

Sensational stories of the Psychonauts' heroic exploits are depicted in True Psychic Tales, a comic book aimed at children. Furthermore, some agents of the organization are implied to be quite famous. The public's opinion on the Psychonauts seems to be quite divided, however, as some people believe the organization is past its prime and not particularly useful to the world. As a result, the Psychonauts no longer receive sufficient government funding to meet all of their needs, and are currently experiencing financial difficulties.

History[]

The Psychonauts were founded by the Psychic Six, a group of experts of the paranormal led by Ford Cruller. They were called in by the international community to deal with genocidal psychic named Maligula, who was on a rampage determined to flood the country of Grulovia. The Psychic Six agreed to fight Maligula, and after a long battle they managed to defeat her. With Maligula believed to be dead, the Psychonauts were officially founded and were given their own base of operations known as the Motherlobe.

The Psychonauts then recruited various psychics from around the world, and became a group of international psychic espionage, and most of their adventures were reported in True Psychic Tales, albeit with a few creative liberties. The Psychonauts then set up Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, in order to train psychic children to control their powers, while also preparing potential future agents. The camp then became one of the Psychonauts main sources of income. Other sites founded by the Psychonauts include:

Geodesic Psychoisolation Chambers[]

Isolation chamber scrubbed

An isolation chamber.

The Psychonauts used to operate Geodesic Psychoisolation Chambers as solitary confinement for Psychics. Psychics were locked inside the chambers for an unknown reason, likely for experimentation, however the practice stopped sometime in the 1950's. Several decommissioned chambers remain at Whispering Rock.

Charlie Psycho Delta[]

The Psychonauts organization constructed an underwater base located in the Rhombus of Ruin. The purpose of the laboratory was to study the effects from a large underwater Psilirium deposit on the human mind. The effects proved to be incredibly harmful to the Psychonaut members stationed at the facility, and it was quickly abandoned. The facility was later used as a hideout for (and was subsequently destroyed by) Dr. Caligosto Loboto.

PSI Power Restrictions[]

There are some legal restrictions enforced by the Psychonauts on how psychics can use their powers. In Psychonauts, if Razputin tries to use the Psycho-Portal on a camper it fails and the following text is displayed: "In accordance with Section 3, Paragraph 1 of the "Young Minds Protection Act," any device created for the purpose of invasive psychic procedure must have built-in safeguards which make its use upon anyone under the age of eighteen (18) impossible."

Trivia[]

  • According to Ford Cruller, the official motto of the Psychonauts is "Prepare your mind."
  • The Psychonauts have their own digital newspaper titled The Daily Brain.
  • There are two psychonauts who are both named "Sherri" stationed at the Motherlobe.
  • Some of the extra NPC Psychonauts in the Motherlobe that don't have unique dialogue name titles in Psychonauts 2 actually do have names in the filename system. These names are Zahra, Jeremy, Lisette, Monica, Kristen, Clam, Tucker, Justin, Miyuki, Tucker, and Asif.
