Rhombus of Ruin

There was an issue of True Psychic Tales that talked about the Rhombus of Ruin. But I assumed it was just a legend! But it looks pretty real to me. According to True Psychic Tales issue #43, the heart of the Rhombus of Ruin is an enormous psilirium deposit, so powerful it can confuse and attract the minds of pilots and captains for miles and miles! Like a deadly mental magnet. The Psychonauts tried to set up research stations like this one to study it but no one could bear the psilirium mental effects.

Raz

The Rhombus of Ruin is the main setting of Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin.

Background

The Rhombus of Ruin is a named part of the ocean where legends of many ships and vehicles have gone missing. The cause of these incidents is the large brain-like deposit of Psilirium at the heart of the Rhombus of Ruin causing any nearby technology to go haywire. The Psychonauts built a facility in the Rhombus to research affects of Psilirium. The facility was abandoned after numerous members reported experiencing harmful side-effects from the Psilirium deposit. Dr. Loboto sets up his temporary base in the abandoned facility to keep Truman Zanotto as prisoner. It is eventually destroyed by Dr. Loboto after he decides to self-destruct the facility.

Story

Immediately after the ending of Psychonauts, Raz and his friends must take the organization's jet to save the abducted head of the Psychonauts, Truman Zanotto. They trace Truman's location to the Rhombus of Ruin, a dangerous part of the ocean known for it's history of disappearing vehicles. However, the jet receives major interference and crashes into the ocean. Fortunately, all the passengers survive, but are now trapped in various areas scattered around the Rhombus of Ruin.

It is revealed the source of the interference was a large underwater deposit of Psilirium, a dangerous mineral to psychics. The Psilirium has caused everyone to experience severe Psilirium poisoning except for Raz. He wakes up strapped to a chair and notices that none of his allies are around, and the facility filled with humanoid guards resembling sea-monsters. Raz use his psychic powers to save Coach, Lili, Sasha, and Milla from their respective hallucinations. Using Clairvoyance, Raz travels around the facility using the eyes of whatever body he lands in.

Milla is stuck in a sunken school bus and must be rescued by having Raz play her favorite song on the radio. Sasha is trapped in a fake UFO and must have his favorite record played on the record player to escape his hallucination. Lili is caged in the submarine and must have her music box fixed and played for her to escape the garden hallucination. Coach Oleander must have his giant speakers destroyed and his stage flooded to escape his pop-singer trance.

Once all of Raz's allies are rescued, Oleander warns Raz of whom he thinks is running the facility. Dr. Loboto suddenly appears in front of Raz, who is still trapped in a dentist chair. Loboto threatens to take out his brain and deliver it to his current contractor, and turns around to prepare his medical equipment. Oleander arrives just in time to give Raz his psycho portal through an opening in the floor. Raz hastily uses the portal to enter Loboto's mind, where Raz and Loboto fight his inner demons and discover his past childhood trauma. Upon exiting Loboto's mind, his sanity is partially restored and he begins to feel remorseful over his past actions. He then uses his microphone to advise the fish guards to swim away from the facility, and sets the base to self-destruct. After Raz unlocks the restraints for the jet, the Psychonauts escape with their mission accomplished. Loboto secretly stows away on the jet and escapes with them. It is unknown if any of the fish guards survived the facility implosion, if the Psilirium deposit is still intact, or how much damage the implosion dealt to the surrounding area in the Rhombus of Ruin.

Points of interest

School bus

Milla stuck in a trance.

Milla is stuck in a trance on the underwater school bus and must be rescued by Raz. She is convinced the school bus is filled with children in danger of being struck by a nearby train. This is rooted in Milla's traumatic memory of losing her own children to a fire.

In actuality, the school bus children are the mutated fish guards monitoring the situation. Raz must return power to the bus by opening the front hood and using the stop sign to trap an electric eel inside the engine. This will turn on the radio. When switched to the channel 105.7, it will play Milla's favorite disco song and break the hallucination.

Fake UFO

Sasha Nein is stuck in a trance on the fake UFO. He believes the UFO is real and it is populated with real aliens, who are actually the mutated fish guards. To release Sasha from the Psilirium poisoning, Raz must play Sasha's favorite song on a record found inside the ship.
