The Lab

Bring me a good brain, Sheegor, or Mr. Pokeylope becomes Mr. Smokey-lope!

–Loboto

The Laboratory is the main location of Dr. Loboto's and Coach Oleander's projects in Psychonauts, situated at the very top of Thorney Towers Home for the Disturbed.

Description[]

From Old Psychopedia[]

"Now, in the famous words of maps everywhere, YOU ARE HERE. This is Loboto’s Lab, a magical room filled to the brim with lovely things like Mr. Pokeylope’s habitrail, a giant bubble thing, and various sadistic tools of the dental variety. Beyond it lies the room where Brainless! Sasha, Brainless! Milla, and Mightaswellbebrainless! Lili sit, waiting for you, and where Sheegor whiles away the time having tea parties with herself and mourning the loss of her pet turtle, whom she used to frequently hold tea parties and long conversations with, for she is crazy and crazy people do that. But back to the lab.

This lab is where Loboto goes when he wants to dissect some brains or drink away his problems. It holds a working, scale model of a brain tank, “one quarter actual size”. That’s saying something, because that thing’s pretty huge. Bigger than an economy car, at least. Considering these things are going to be running on the same brains that this morning accused Raz of being a lake monster, droned on for five minutes about a dog named Lady, thought they were aliens, and created the horrible “Raz the Spaz” pun, this author thinks it’ll be a wonder if the real things can manage to drive in a straight line, let alone cause a global psychic apocalypse. But I digress.

Loboto’s lab, in short, is awesome, and everyone should go in there right now and throw a rave.

...That was long.

Oh yeah, and check out his chalk board. Just you try figuring out what the heck all those obscure scribbles are supposed to be. And his doodles. What evil mad man wouldn’t have doodles on his chalkboard that concerns his evil schemes? I would love to go in there now and erase all that. His reaction would be well worth a Kodak moment."

Psychonauts[]

In Psychonauts, the lab is home to a working Brain Tank prototype, as well as a terrarium that has the turtle Mr. Pokeylope inside. Behind the lab is a holding chamber where Lili is held, along with brainless Sasha and Milla. During the player's first trip to the lab (and before completing the area), Sheegor is in the room as well.

From nightfall onward, Razputin's main objective is to scale the asylum and reach the Lab to save Lili, Sasha, and Milla, who are being held captive, and foil Dr. Loboto's plans. Along with the rest of the asylum, the lab is destroyed by Boyd Cooper soon after Raz accomplishes these goals.

Psychonauts 2[]

While the physical building in the real world has been destroyed, Loboto's Labyrinth features a mental representation of the Lab at the end of the level. Dr. Loboto retreats to the safety of the mental version of his lab to escape the Psychonauts probing his mind but is confronted by a shadowy figure who reminds him of his mission and threatens him with a vision of Maligula.

Trivia[]

  • The lab elevator leads down to the asylum grounds.
  • A heavily damaged brain can be found in the lab before it's destroyed. It's owner is unknown. Sheegor mentions that she salvaged any remaining brains before the destruction of the facility, so the brain is likely in her care.
  • Psychonauts developers originally wanted to add a scene where Loboto fell into Linda's open mouth after getting shot off the tower. Since players don't see Loboto after he falls, this is a plausible theory for how Loboto survived the fall.[1]
