The Peasants |
–Peasant
The Peasants were mental figures that appeared in Waterloo World in Psychonauts. They were resistant to go up against the army of Napoleon Bonaparte, but became Fred's militia after Razputin managed to convince them to fight back. They were all destroyed while fighting the French Soldiers.
Psychonauts[]
There are three different Peasants in Waterloo World. They all are recruited by Raz to join Fred Bonaparte's fight against Napoleon's troops. Each of one them "dies" after fighting the troops. What distinguish one from each other is their motivations, while the main one is taking down Napoleon and his army, they also have their own individual and personal reasons:
First Peasant[]
The first Peasant refuses to join the army because he thinks Fred does not care about his people. Raz must ask Fred to write a note stating he truly cares about the townsfolk to convince the Peasant to join the army. When attempting to offer him money or a musket he will refuse; on the other hand, after handing him the note from Fred he gets overjoyed and takes part in the war sacrificing his life to kill one of Napoleon's soldiers.
Second Peasant[]
The second Peasant refuses to join the army unless he gets paid money for his family expenses as a result of his wife blowing money on scrapbook supplies. At first, he won't come out of his house because one of Napoleon's soldiers is nearby. Even after the soldier is defeated by the first Peasant, the second fellow peasant won't still come out so Raz must find a rare heirloom in a fireplace to give it to him as his payment. The Peasant says goodbye to his wife and dies in the battle with the second soldier.
Third Peasant[]
In a early point of the level, the third Peasant leaves a note in his door saying "Out bullet shopping. Back in a few." making it only available to interact and recruit after the second French Soldier is taken down. Once the second soldier is defeated, the third peasant will demand for a musket so he gets a chance to fight for the cause; and so Razputin must bring the third Peasant a weapon from the heavily guarded building located in front of the stronghold. However, after Raz gives him the musket the third Peasant begins to make his way to rob the carpenter. Nonetheless, Raz explains he got the gun for the third Peasant to fight in the war. The third Peasant agrees to fight for practice so he can successfully rob the carpenter later. He successfully kills the last soldier but dies in the process.
Quotes[]
First Peasant[]
- (Initial Conversation): "Go away! Fred Bonaparte has forgotten the people, and we have forgotten him!"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "He has abandoned us! He doesn’t care if we live or die!"
- (Following Dialogue 2): "I’ll believe it when I hear it from him!"
- (Alternate Conversation): "Did you talk to Fred Bonaparte yet?"
- (Showing him the Coin): "I’m not in this for the money. If our leaders cared about us I’d fight for nothing!"
- (Showing him the Musket): "Oh, I got a gun already. But who cares about killing unless you’re killing FOR someone."
- (Showing him the Fred’s Letter): "Oh my god! He does care! He does! I knew it! Fred Bonaparte is the greatest leader of all time! I can’t wait to die for his cause!"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Hey, he’s a great leader but… he’s still Fred."
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Okay, hurl my innocent bones into the cruel machine of war. I’m ready."
- (Using Pyrokinesis into him): "Quit it! I’m made of wood!"
- (Using any other offensive PSI-Powers into him): "Hey, knock it off!"
- (Direct Conversation): "I’m on it! But I can’t get over that broken bridge there."
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Maybe you could get that lazy carpenter to fix it?"
- (Directly interacting with objects): "I don’t care about anything now, except for my fearless leader Fred!"
- (Direct Conversation 2): "Okay, I’m ready."
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Now put me right next to Napoleon’s lackey and you’ll see some action!"
- (Facing the French Soldier): "Ha! Ah! Take that!"
- (Using Confusion into him): "Ohhh ohhhh…"
Second Peasant[]
- (Initial Conversation): "Yes!"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Hm. What’s the pay?"
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Pffft! Forget it."
- (Alternate Conversation): "What’s the pay?"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "This work is hazardous. I want hazard pay."
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Not for me you understand. It’s to take care of my family once I’m killed."
- (Following Dialogue 2): "You just come back when you get Fred to pay up."
- (Showing him the Fred’s Letter): "Well then he should put his money where his mouth is and PAY US."
- (Showing him the Musket): "It would be cool if we had some pawn shops in this town and I could SELL IT."
- (Showing him the Coin): "What’s the pay?"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "MONEY! OH MAN!"
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Well, I’m off to die in the battle, dear, for an incompetent leader who will never know my name. I hope you remarry well!"
- (Following Dialogue 3): "I just hope she doesn’t spend it all on scrapbook-making supplies. She’s gone nuts about that stuff. Part of the reason I’m so ready to die."
- (Following Dialogue 4): "Anyway, let’s go! War ahoy and all that stuff!"
- (Direct Conversation): "Well, I hope you saved a little dough to fix that broken bridge over there, cuz I can’t get to the soldier until you do that."
- (Directly interacting with objects): "I only care about how much I’m getting paid."
- (Using any offensive PSI-Powers into him): "Hey, you’re not paying me enough to do that!"
- (Direct Conversation 2): "I’m ready. Send me over there!"
- (Facing the French Soldier): "Pow! Gah! Oof!"
- (Using Confusion into him): "ooohhh ohhh…"
Third Peasant[]
- (Initial Conversation): "Go away! I’m not coming out ’til the soldier’s gone! I’m unarmed!"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Yeah, nice try."
- (Alternate Conversation): "Weapon."
- (Following Dialogue 1): "Weapon. That’s what I want. I’m not going to die like the others, okay?"
- (Following Dialogue 2): "You get me my special Musket and I’ll come out. I think I left it buried in some hay in that heavily-guarded building over there."
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Then I’ll sign up and kill me some Napoleon-lovers. Got it?"
- (Showing him the Coin): "Man. I could buy a gun with that if there were a decent pawn shop in town."
- (Showing him the Musket): "Alright! Now I’m all set to go rob that stupid Carpenter!"
- (Following Dialogue 1): "I’ve been trying to break into his house for days now, but he’s always got a fire going so I can’t get down his chimney!"
- (Following Dialogue 2): "Okay, but just as practice."
- (Following Dialogue 3): "Where is he?"
- (Direct Conversation): "I’m too far away. You gotta move me closer to that soldier."
- (Using any offensive PSI-Powers into him): "Careful. I have a gun."
- (Facing the French Soldier): "Cool Musket, huh? Oh, wait. Have to reload here…"
- (Using Confusion into him): "Ohhhh.. Ohhhh…"
