Tomb of the Sharkophagus is a level in Psychonauts 2. It takes place inside of Ford Cruller's mental world, which is known more broadly as Ford's Fractured Mind.

Description[]

The Tomb of the Sharkophagus is the area of Ford's Mind where Ford attempted to lay his painful memories of Maligula and the truth about his own actions to rest once and for all. For a long time, Ford's Mind was shattered, and the truth was buried, but Razputin fixes Ford Cruller's mind on Truman Zanotto's orders, and so he is forced to witness the unpleasant full extent of that truth here.

The Tomb is a very short level, mostly focused on important plot reveals. It takes the form of a graveyard with crypts for Ford's other aspects, which is located inside a large pine forest that might be connected in some way to the mental Whispering Rock seen previously in Agent Cruller's mind. The Sharkophagi the level is named for—living coffins with teeth that swim through the air like sharks—are found underground, in the crypt section.

Sub-areas[]

  • Graveyard: This portion of the mental world contains a plain yet extensive field filled with graveyards and a small initial section with many vines and woods on the sides (Oddly, a graveyard with the face of a Memory Vaults can be seen at the left side of the entrance). On the first visit to this area, a giant steel comb rakes all the grass and tombstones along the way, in an attempt to finish Raz.
  • Tomb of the Sharkophagus: Abnormally huge in height and disorienting looking as a whole; this part contains a set of crypts on different walls of the place, each one having an aspect of Ford Cruller (obvious exception the ones seen in Psychonauts 1). Two wooden coffin-looking sharks are swimming around which also explains the given name to this mental location.
  • Coffin: A small area that distinguish itself by being completely composed of the inside of a luxurious (alternatively named premium casket). The beginning point of this area is very small; Raz can barely fit in it on a resting position, the next part has a matrimonial bed with two skulls which belongs to Lazarus and Marona Aquato. The last segment includes parts of the casket torn apart, a window referencing the Green Needle Gulch and many cobwebs on the roof and corners, strikingly, a mental representation of the Astralathe lays in here.
  • The Caravan: While barely able to see, the area seems to be located at either The Questionable Area or the Fairgrounds seen in some memory vaults of Raz and Nona. Aside from this, at the center of the place a representation of the Aquatos' Caravan stays.

In Psychonauts 2[]

When Raz arrives here, Ford, now dressed as a gravedigger, gestures for him to enter the graveyard. Inside, Raz is pursued by a huge steel comb, which plucks across the gravestones to play Maligula's theme as though the entire graveyard was a music box. Finally, Raz reaches an open grave, which he jumps down to avoid the comb. He anxiously calls out for Ford, unsure if he wants to see the truth, but Ford disregards him and shovels dirt into the grave.

Razputin then claws his way out of the ground only to find himself emerging upside down from the ceiling of a large vertical cave containing several crypts and the titular Sharkophagi. Raz gently floats down to each successive crypt, where he finds the three aspects of Ford from the previous levels. Bowler Ford tells Raz he did what he had to do, because "he loved her", then lies down on a bowling lane and slides off into the pit. Barber Ford says that Lucrecia is "safe", or at least that she used to be, then dives backwards into a vat of Hydrocide. Finally, Mail Clerk Ford admits that he hid her with family, before disappearing into a typewriter's paper slot.

Falling even further down, Raz ends up in Maligula's open grave, where the coffin's lid shuts on him. He regains control inside the coffin, which extends into a series of velvet-covered tunnels. Further down, Raz finds a bed containing the skeletons of his grandparents, who Ford's voice tells him died in the Valermo Dam disaster despite Raz having been told that his grandmother survived it. Then, he comes across the Astralathe, as Ford explains that he used this device to seal the murderous parts of Lucrecia away inside her psyche. Finally, Raz reaches a door that leads out to his own family's caravan, as Ford confesses that he hid Lucrecia among the Aquato family and manipulated Razputin's father Augustus to accept her as his mother, when she was really his aunt.

In shock, Razputin exits Ford's Mind and rushes out to his family's campsite, but he's tackled to the ground by Ford before he can reach it. Ford promises him he can be mad later, but that they need to make sure Maligula doesn't come out first. The two of them then go out to Green Needle Gulch to reinforce Maligula's mental prison using the Astralathe.

Figments[]

Tomb of the Sharkophagus contains 20 figments, most of which are graveyard-themed.

Emotional Baggage[]

  • Purse
    • Bag: Behind the Astralathe.
    • Tag: On top of one of the sharks made out of coffins. It's easiest to use Time Bubble to slow it down and jump on top of it to grab the tag.

Memory Vaults[]

  • Ford Cruller, Cracked: In the first area to the right, in front of the Memory Vault-shaped grave. Only available during a revisit.

Half-A-Minds[]

  • Found in Mail Clerk Ford's crypt, on the right of this room.

Trivia[]

  • Tomb of the Sharkophagus is the only proper level in Psychonauts 2 to contain no enemies of any kind.
  • Using the "plucky" perk in the Tomb of the Sharkocophagus has Raz pick up a rock, identical to those used in real world areas.
  • A similar tune but mildly modified is also used at the Mental Dam of Lucrecia's Lament.
  • Tomb of the Sharkophagus is the only mental world related to Ford to have a unique alter ego not seen anywhere in the real world; being this the Grave Digger.
  • Without cutscenes, this is the mind with the shortest duration on a regular playthrough along the Whispering Rock segment when first arriving into Ford Cruller's mind.
    • Mostly because these levels function as a way of revealing specific stuff associated to the plot and story of the game and their characters.
